Australia's sophisticated side unites tennis and wine
By Liza HoranNew York—Aussies Roy Emerson and Mark Woodforde (right) participated in a wine blending competition on Aug. 20 at an intimate dinner party hosted by the Tennis Channel and McWilliam's Wines at the W's Heartbeat restaurant in midtown. A four-course meal by Australian celebrity chef Peter Howard—featuring an appetizer of shrimp, pink grapefruit and bocconcini salad with macadamia lime dressing and a main course of oven-roasted rack of "Australian Meat & Livestock" lamb over truffle smashed potatoes and red wine jus—was eloquently guided by Scott McWilliam (below right with Emmo), a sixth generation winewaker who shared cabernet sauvignon, merlot, riesling, chardonnay, shiraz and two special dessert wines with guests. A 2006 vintage Botrytis Semillon, served with Chef Howard's "reconstructed Peach Melba," was an exceptional cap to the evening. (See menu at bottom.)
The relationship between McWilliam's and the Tennis Channel began with a special promotion around the 2007 Australian Open. "We've identified that people who play or enjoy tennis also have a level of interest in wine, more so than any other sport," said McWilliam. "Wine is generally drunk by people who appreciate the more sophisticated things in life." The occasion of the tennis-wine dinner was to "celebrate the sophisticated side of Australia," and guests got to mingle with Woodie and Emmo (below with the Mrs.), who was raised on a dairy farm in Blackbutt. He reflected on
his early tennis aspirations, saying, "I could always go back and milk cows if I didn't do too well on the tennis circuit. That's why I tried to do well!"
Woodforde, who retired from pro tennis in 2000 and now works as a TV commentator, is best known for his stellar doubles career with Todd Woodbridge. What most people don't know is that he paired with John McEnroe to score his first major doubles title at the 1989 U.S. Open. And, that was his third title with the New Yorker. They also won at Los Angeles and San Francisco the previous year.
Australian parliament member John Olsen and wife Helen attended the dinner, as did American pro Zack Fleishman.
