Congress approves $80 million for physical education

By Liza Horan

Congress has approved spending $80 million in physical education for the upcoming school year. And some of those dollars are bound for public tennis programs. After all, the USTA, Tennis Industry Association, HEAD/Penn, Nike, Prince, Wilson and Sportime clubs helped it happen.

Those organizations are part of the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, which staged its "National Health through Fitness Day" on Capitol Hill in March as it does every year. The premise is fighting obesity and other health issues by getting the youth moving. It is prevention that lowers medical costs and lifts bottom lines of the sports industry.

The funding secured this year is an increase over last year ($1 million), just as every year since 2001 when the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) bill was passed.
